RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) removes kidney stones with a flexible telescope and holmium laser passed through the natural urine passage — no cuts, no stitches and usually home within a day. Dr. Kumar Rajesh Ranjan, M.Ch (Urology), performs RIRS at Satyadev Super Speciality Hospital, Patna.

RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is a minimally invasive kidney stone operation in which a thin, flexible ureteroscope is passed through the urethra, bladder and ureter into the kidney, and a holmium laser breaks the stone into dust or tiny fragments. It is generally used for kidney stones up to about 2 cm, involves no cut on the body, and most patients go home the same day or the next day. In Patna, RIRS is performed by M.Ch urologist Dr. Kumar Rajesh Ranjan at Satyadev Super Speciality Hospital.
In RIRS the urologist reaches the stone from inside, travelling up the same path urine takes down. A flexible ureteroscope, thinner than a pencil, bends inside the kidney so it can reach stones in every part — including the lower pole, which is hard to reach by other methods.
A holmium laser fibre passed through the scope breaks the stone. Small fragments are removed with a basket or turned into fine dust that passes out with urine over the next days.
For stones larger than about 2 cm or staghorn stones, PCNL keyhole surgery usually clears the stone faster in one sitting. Dr. Ranjan advises which one suits your stone; see the overview on our kidney stone treatment page.
RIRS is chosen based on stone size, position and your health.
Single or multiple kidney stones
Hard-to-reach parts of the kidney
Heart or stroke patients
Where keyhole access is difficult
Large or staghorn stones
Infection must be treated first
All three treat kidney stones; the right one depends on the stone.
